Situated on one of the world’s most beautiful mountain passes, Clouds Wine and Guest Estate is a small boutique hotel on top of Helshoogte pass. This private estate is a working farm that produces its own wines. It also offers premium accommodation that blends designer luxury with all the mod-cons. A stylish destination surrounded by incredible views, a stay at Clouds Hotel & Villas is difficult to forget.

History

The estate came to pass because a Dutch couple holidayed in South Africa back in the year 2000, and fell in love with the wine, the food, the landscape and the historical connections with their homeland… Great lovers of wine and good design, Paul Burema and Jolanda van Haperen dreamed of owning their own wine farm. A dream that finally came true when they were able to purchase a modest estate with vineyards, accommodation and extraordinary views.

They then set about remodelling the old guesthouse into a contemporary hotel that cleverly opened up to the views. They also landscaped the grounds, and brought in Dutch designer pieces and South African art for the interiors. And voila, Clouds as we know it today was born!

Food & Wine

Clouds serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Their food philosophy is elegant comfort food, their menus are seasonal using fresh, local ingredients.

The climate and soil of Clouds support the harvesting of grapes for winemaking on this working wine farm. Leading viticultural manager, Wynand Pienaar, takes care of Clouds’ grapes and plants pinot noir, cabernet, merlot, petite verdot and chardonnay grapes as well as the estate’s renowned sauvignon blanc.

Awarding-winning winemaker, Donovan Rall has worked across Europe, Moselle and New Zealand, and is the resident winemaker at Clouds, working closely with owner Paul. Rall’s vision is to infuse all of Clouds’ wines with flavours of Clouds’ own harvest.

Clouds is famous for its “Pink” Sauvignon Blanc. Its fruity aromas include kiwifruit and gooseberry flavours. The light yellow Sauvignon Blanc, with hints of lime, is also a favourite.

The Clouds Chardonnay has citrus and eucalyptus tones, while their Pinot Noir has hints of sour cherries and earthy undertones. The estate’s Sauvignon Blanc Methode Cap Classique features apple and citrus flavours that bubble to the surface.
