Spier Hotel

The Spier Hotel is situated on the historic Spier wine farm in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands, just 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.

Village-style buildings, lush green lawns and spacious rooms situated next to the calming Eerste River are the defining characteristics of the 4 star Spier Hotel. Their rooms are clustered around six courtyards, each with its own swimming pool. The design is reminiscent of the Bo-Kaap or Mediterranean villages where pedestrians have right of way. In the Condé Nast Traveler 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards, the four star Spier Hotel was ranked 18 in the list of top 25 hotels in Africa.

Spier was one of the first hotels to be awarded the Fair Trade in Tourism SA accreditation in 2004. Food
  • Eight Restaurant: is a pioneering farm-to-table eating experience. Natural and organic ingredients are preferred and combined to create nourishing, healthy, and delicious food, which diners can enjoy in a beautiful setting next to the Eerste River.
  •  Picnics at Eight to Go: The picnics at Spier have been revamped, and are available from newly-created Eight to Go. Eight to Go offers ready-to-eat food, lovingly prepared according to the same principles as Eight Restaurant. Local, natural and organic produce is used wherever possible, and food grown on the Spier farm is preferred.
  • Spier Hotel Restaurant & Wine Bar: Guests can enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail with bar snacks or light meals on the terrace of the Spier Hotel Wine Bar. For elegant a la carte dining, Spier Hotel’s restaurant is well appointed. Both the Restaurant and Wine Bar strive to source the freshest available produce for the menus from a range of local suppliers.

Activities
  • Camelot Spar: A boutique spa run by industry experts, Camelot, is located at the Spier Hotel. Therapies have been specifically selected to counter the pressures and demands placed on the body by the strain of urban living. With a focus on impeccable quality and holistic health, the spa offers a new generation of therapies based on natural plant and spa marine technology.
  • ‘Gables’ Audio Tour: Spier was established in 1692, and has a colourful history. ‘Gables’ is an audio tour of the Spier farmstead, a fictionalised account of the world of a Stellenbosch wine farm around 200 years ago. It was researched and written by acclaimed playwright, Brett Bailey. The narrator is Sannie de Goede, a slave woman on the Spier Estate in 1836, on the eve of her freedom.
  •  Vineyard Tours: Visit the Spier vineyards on the Segway PT (Personal Transporter), a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle. The tour combines a beautiful glide through the farm with some interesting facts about Spier’s Protea Garden and wastewater treatment plant on the way.
  •  Protea Walk: Situated on the South bank of the Eerste River, the walk offers an opportunity to observe close-up the large variety of proteas growing on the farm. Eminent landscape architect Patrick Watson and horticulturalist Wilton Sikhosana helped establish this beautiful walk, which celebrates their magnificent national flower.
  •  Heritage Walk: Their Heritage Walk combines a beautiful amble through nature with some interesting facts about Spier’s heritage. The walk takes guests past some of the historic buildings (such as the 1822 Manor House and South Africa’s oldest dated wine cellar). There are also some interesting facts about Spier’s natural and social heritage on the walk, and information on some of their related projects.  One example is the wastewater treatment plant which combines nature, art and technology, creating a space of cleansing and healing for one of our most precious resources.
  •  Art: Spier has one of the most extensive collections of contemporary art in the country. A small selection is displayed in the public spaces at Spier, including the Manor House, Conference Centre and Hotel. The work is rotated on an annual basis to give exposure to as many of the artists as possible, and to keep the spaces fresh and alive for visitors and staff. The art chosen for display aims to show the richness and diversity of the SA experience and artistic talent.
  •  Conservation Projects: Spier supports Eagle Encounters by donating land, electricity and water for its facilities on the farm. It is a bird-of-prey rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism project. The centre receives birds that have been injured, poisoned or illegally removed from their nests, and works towards re-releasing healthy, fit, successfully hunting and able-breeding raptors into the wild. Guests to Spier are invited to ‘hold’ tame birds, as well as participate in the daily flying display.
  •  Craft Market: The craft market and craft shop at Spier Hotel are projects of the Spier Craft Development Programme. Together they promote the work of more than 90 different craft enterprises; the majority of them previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. Products at both venues are selected on the basis of quality and variety and the bulk of income from any purchase goes back to the craft producer. The hotel shop, in particular, showcases pieces which reflect vibrant contemporary aesthetic and special commissions are undertaken on request.
